Rockstar Games is seriously considering a sequel set in Tokyo after the success of GTA III. This information came to light after data miners confirmed GTA Tokyo references following the leak of GTA 5 source code in December 2023.
In an interview conducted by TimeExtension, based on a reliable source who previously worked at Rockstar, this information was officially revealed to be true.
According to the source, the idea of GTA Tokyo came about when Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser frequently visited Japan during the promotion of GTA III. Houser thought Tokyo would be an interesting city that would suit the atmosphere of the game. However, Rockstar eventually abandoned the project.
These difficulties led Rockstar to decide to return to cities it knew and used in its games before. In short, Rockstar Games decided not to leave its safe zone by avoiding making a bold move.
